Miao, her mother, and I went to a restaurant on Friday that called itself a “Brazilian BBQ and Micro-Brewery”. My experience was a little disappointing for the cost of the meal. Meals at normal restaurants in China usually cost around 10 yuan a head (80p). This meal cost 41 yuan a head, and only included free beer during the day, and not at night as previously thought. The meats on the menu really did not appear to have any “Brazilian” names e.g. (Translation appearing on the menu) Munich Roasts the Intestine, Fruit Pisa, Meat Stuffing Pisa and Sichuan Fragrant Fat Cow. The delivery of the food was by a buffet, and by waiters carving meat at each table in turn. They did this with great efficiency and variety of food, but this system offered no choice in meat and very small portions, we really enjoyed the chicken wings they offered (received first), but they didn’t come around again until we were leaving an hour later. What perhaps, I think, put me off the most was the atmosphere, it was loud, busy and the tables were far too close together. The table next us started smoking (the people not the item) which didn’t endear me either. Anyway, general impressions Food: not bad, all be it a little salty. Drink: Beer was excellent, coffee watered down. Atmosphere: Noisy, compact.
After the restaurant we had planned to go to a photography show, so we got on the bus, and walked to perhaps within 100 meters of the bookshop it was being held in, was directed in completely the wrong way by a married pregnant couple. So after an hour of walking around we decided to call it a day and go home. On the walk back to the bus stop we saw this young couple fighting quite fiercely in the street, slapping each other, the girl got knocked to the ground, and he started walking off, only for her to get up and pursue him and hit him again. Foolish girl. Having retreated to a safe distance, Miao called the police, and we settle near a restaurant to wait for the police to come. Come they did, relatively quickly too, maybe 3-4 minutes, and took statements. Anyway, I felt a little shocked that it was happening, and that the girl was cle arly not helping. I have more confidence in the Chinese police now that I’ve had some experience of their speed.
A Chinese policeman walking up the road…
Onto lesson planning. Yay
