The pass mark for courses in China is 60%, this to me seems rather high, given that in the EEE department at Imperial College, the pass mark of any particular exam is 30%, with a 40% average over all your exams, and a 40% average over all your coursework. This would seem to suggest that either my department was very hard, or that Chinese courses are very easy. I feel that it is probably a combination of both, as DUFL is a second tier Chinese university, and Imperial is top 5 UK university, and depending on who is rating them, top 10 world university, or top 50.
China has 3 tiers of universities, the top level having 2 parts. School students have to take a college entrance exam, which apparently has nothing to do with their exam performances at school. Their mark in this exam determines which tier university they can go to, Excellent students go to Top tier universities, if you just missed out you go to lower top tier universities. If you are an ok student then generally you go to second tier universities, and they cost a little more than the top ones. If you totally flunked the entrance exam and your family has money, you go to third tier universities. This seems a little useless as I gather that to get a degree all you need is to attend the course and sign your name on the exam papers.
