Today, I was told to ****** (something in Chinese which I didn’t understand) the meaning of which was “Please don’t take a picture of me, kindly move on!” (in not so many polite words) So I obliged. The reason I was taking a picture was cause the man was wearing a yellow T-Shirt with some English slogan on it, and I thought it was rather juxaposed with his look. So here he is (his expression really says it):
I was walking past the local PLA (People’s Liberation Army) Naval training barracks that I walked past every day that I taught last semester, when I walked over the line (not by much) infront of the entrance gates, to get onto the opposite pavement. This resulted in a shout from the guards and some hand gestures indicating to get back on the other site. I must mention that the pavement on both sides of the gate is behind the line, and to walk on the other side means to walk on the road, competing for space with the cars. Walking behind the yellow line is something that I’ve done many times before with nay a reaction in the guards there before, but today the uniforms were differnt. I dared not take any pictures openly, so I was walking with the camera lowered. Here is a picture of the guard before it happened, and I was really quite a distance away so they wouldn’t notice (the yellow line and pavement can be seen):
