Having felt unappreciated and a useless teacher last week, I’ve regained some of my happiness. I asked for help from the department, and emailed my students opinions to the appropriate people. In the class which was causing my demoralisation, one of the lovely course co-ordinators observed my lesson, and gave a 15 min speech to class at the end. The main gist of which was: Be responsible for your progress in English, work hard otherwise you wont learn, games let you feel free, but don’t rely on the knowledge you’ve learnt already, and take this opportunity to do well with this hard working and responsible teacher (me). Perhaps I shouldn’t feel so connected to the idea that if my students are bored and unhappy, then I’m a bad teacher, but rather see the overall picture to include the students, their motivations and preconceptions. Having raised the issue with the department, and them taking action, the responsibility is back with me again. I hope I can do well.
