Reading Test Instructions

As part of my teaching, I’m required to grade my students in a number of small tests. The form of these tests is entirely the discretion of the teacher. What follows are my instructions to my students for this reading test that I did in my second semester teaching at university. The reading material I used was from a book the students would use in their next year at university. My hope is that this material is useful to other TEFL teachers either in or out of China.

Reading Test Instructions

We will have a reading test, worth 10 marks. Each student will read for 1.5 minutes (90 seconds) from a sheet that the teacher gives you. You can see an example of a reading on the next page, the level has been chosen to be harder than you are used to, so that the teacher can see really excellent students more easily, do not feel worried.

If the teacher can arrange another classroom for the test, students will have the test with just the teacher. If the teacher cannot get another room, then the test will be done in front of class. The test will be done in the order of student numbers, for example, Student 01 first, Student 02 second, Student 03 third… Student 29, Student 30, Student 31. In the test lesson, the teacher suggests that students bring something quiet activity to class, such as reading a book. It is important that students are quiet if the teacher is testing in the class room, so that the teacher can hear each student clearly, and mark well.

Test Procedure – If another room is free

The 1st (Student 01), 2nd (Student 02), and 3rd student (Student 03) will come to the test room with me at the beginning of the lesson.

  • 2 students wait outside the test room.

    • Student comes into test room
    • Student sits down
