Posted by Alastair in Uncategorized on April 4, 2009
When people mention Ordos, the first word that comes into their mind is prairie, and the other one is Ordos cashmere sweater. But today I want to introduce a different Ordos to you, that is, the culture of Ordos.
First I want to introduce the most famous festival in the prairie, “NadamuDahui”. It means entertainment and games in Mongolian. It is held between July to August to show people’s joy to good harvest. And it has a history of over eight hundred years. Anyone regardless of their religion and ethnic can all participate. There are three major events during the festival:wrestling, horseracing and Archery. The most important feature of Mongolian wrestling is not allowed to hold leg. Mongolian Plateau is famous for Mongolian horses, the horse is very strong and has great endurance. Since ancient times, Mongolians have a special feeling for horses; Mongols grew up on horseback from childhood. So horse riding is generally considered one of the three techniques that Mongols should master. Today many new events have been added to the festival, and I hope more and more people will get interested in prairie culture.
Then I will introduce Ordos wedding ceremony to you. It contains Ordos culture, food, dancing and singing, and customs and has distinctive geographical characteristics. Ordos wedding ceremony has a unique and strict procedure. The first step is that the bridegroom ride a horse to the bride’s home and carry her, there will also be many other relatives riding horses after them. Then when they leave for the bridegroom’s home, the bride’s relatives will sing goodbye songs to them, which moved the bride and tears fill her eyes. Before finally arrive the bridegroom’s home, the new couple have to ride their horse through two piles of fire. When they finally arrive, the big dinner begin. And the guests will give them presents. In return, the parents will give them other presents. During the dinner, the couple should toast to all the guests. Finally it comes to an end.
I hope from my introduction you can get more information about Ordos culture and have a better understanding. And next time someone ask you about Ordos, you have something more to say.
