As China continues to block Youtube, I’m choosing to post videos via Facebook or Flickr. Thats not to say that I can’t upload to youtube [courtesy of http://www.TubeMogul.com/], just that less internet savvy Chinese readers of my blog will be unable to open such a video. The only problem with Flickr is that even a pro account it limits videos to 90 seconds of playtime. I could use some local video sharing sites, but I feel less than comfortable with not understanding their terms of service, and I have brand loyalty to Youtube and Flickr.
This video is my (and Miao’s) first foray into video editing. Miao of course sourced all the pictures and selected the bit of video (and music) she wanted to use. My only role here was to figure out how to crop the video to her selection and do cross fades for the pictures and insert the PWC logo at the top and tail ends. Also when finished to output an appropriate file format for use in her annual dinner presentation. I had hoped to use and MP4, dual pass codec, but this turned out too complicated for VLC and caused it to crash. It worked happily for uploading to video sharing sites, and in Quicktime, but nobody uses Quicktime in China, or even has it installed. So an AVI was the format of choice at 50% extra space and a lower quality encode. C’est la vie.
The end result worked a treat, Miao got praised for it at the dinner, and I felt happy that I now had a handle on some video editing. I might even try to put something together of all the videos I’ve taken. We’ll have to wait and see on that front.
