This was written by one of my students last semester and I thought it showed something of interest about Chinese attitudes:
Is the internet good or bad for teenagers? Is the internet bad or good? Can it choose to be a good one rather than a bad one? Or our human beings determine what could it be? This question is self-evident. If we put it into good use then the internet would surely make great contribution to our society. And if we do bad things with it internet would not object it at all. Internet, just a tool, charged in our hands, so innocent facing these kinds of questions.
Being with teenagers, a specific community with peculiar characteristics such as curious, energetic and slack. It’s so delicate that one can be easily destroyed by something dull and trivial. They need very much loving concern from parents. Teenagers are likely to addict in the internet because of the strong compulsion created by the satisfaction offered by the digital world. And lack of discipline may also be a obvious reason which the society agreed very much. Also people always create critical voice against the access for teenagers to the internet. To me it seems so ironic that people should act like that. It’s just like blaming a knife when it was used to kill someone. Why don’t the police arrest the knife rather than the murderer? It’s such stupid thing. It’s the misuse of the knife which is bad not its creation. So it’s true with our internet.
Why lots of teenagers lost in the theoretic world? Can it be simply responded as the internet is bad or teenagers are lack of discipline. There ought to be more complex reasons. A recent scientific research states that people with bad relationships with others are more likely to addict in the internet than those who are more successful with one’s community. And this is also true with adults. It may work like this. Teenagers have strong desire towards a beautiful life and willing to pursue it with their energetic bodies. And if their family can’t afford this they will go out to search by their own hands. It’s so boring to have a life just like a well-worn tape which has been played again and again. Besides they may be miserable with the future. You know that a world crowded with adults is too hard for a fresh life to let its first step in. All these burdens lead teenagers to evade the real world. Outside the real one there is only one last for them to have a more happy time. Or maybe there is another one, the death world. I’m not joking after meal. I couldn’t be more solemn with this problem.
Life in teenage is just to bloom, welcoming its most beautiful part. It can’t just be waste in a theoretic world. We must do something before it got stuck in the mud. Teenagers must be involved in prep courses present in varies terms in order to be strong enough to step into the huge world lying in front of them. If we have time for blaming the internet then there is enough time to annihilate the original cause. There is no doubt that internet has been absorbed in our human society and working hard to supporting and constructing it. If we make teenagers use internet in the right way we then can say internet is good for teenagers and if we fail to do so it will be the opposite situation.
