I have a dream

Here’s another speech that I thought illustrated some Chinese culture. :-)

In the year of 1963, Martin Luther King gave a famous speech named “I have a dream” in Washington D.C., fighting for the right for the black people. It seemed like a fantasy at that time in America. But it came true at last. Today I’m here and I also have a dream. I dream that one day, maybe at the end of my forth year in this college, I can buy a car all by myself. I will pay for it without my parents’ financial help.

What do all of you think about me and my dream? First, you need to be certain that I want to buy an inexpensive car but not a cheap one. That means the car will cost me at least 100,000 yuan. And that also means I need to earn 30,000 yuan a year, 2,500 yuan a month from now on if I want to buy it three years later. Now, are you laughing at me in secret? Are you wondering what’s wrong with me? Do you think I’m joking?—Definitely not. Do you think I’m crazy?—I’m not sure. However, to tell you the truth, I want to become crazy for my own car in the future.

Everyone has a dream or once had a dream. You may ask yourself ‘have I ever wanted to be a millionaire or a billionarie’ ; ‘have I ever dreamed of being a superstar’ ; ‘have I ever been eager to become a famous writer just like Jane Austen’ ……the answer is absolutely yes. All of us had these cute, fantastic dreams. We wanted to be the richest guy in the world; we dreamed of the most romantic love in our lives; we wanted to be an artist, we wanted to be a mayor, we wanted to travel all around the world. But now, I want you to ask yourselves once again, have you already forgotten your dreams or are you still pursue them?

I firmly believe that life will give you whatever you will accept. If you accept being average and ordinary, life will make you average and ordinary. If you accept being poor, either financially or in spirit, life will make you poor; and if you accept being unhappy, life will deliver that, too. So what are your choices?

Today, I’m standing here to ask all of you, please, please never forget your dreams and never stop dreaming, even daydream is ok. Because if you want to be a winner, you’ve got to become a dreamer again. Most people have stopped dreaming. They grow up with everyone telling them how special they are. They are really ‘turned on’ about life and about becoming somebody that they’ll be proud of. Then they’re thrown out into the big, real world, and these once motivated, enthusiastic people go into a shell. They begin to develop an attitude that ‘life has passed me by. Life has dealt me a bad hand.’ And that’s not true. Life will never give up you, but only yourselves.

So from today on, start to dream and stay motivated. Most people can stay motivated to two or three months. A few people and stay motivated for two or three years. But a winner will stay motivated for as long as it takes to win. And I want you to be the winner!

Thank you very much.
