Student Essay Entitled "Who Controls the Right of Speech?"

Once we believe that the Western media must be far more reliable than ours. However, after the Tibet Independence, we realize that we’re totally wrong. The role of the media in a Western free society is still a tool of government, serving for politics instead of truth.

Only after beginning to get in touch with some westerns did I realize how the West emphasizes on “ideology”. Actually, it means nothing to our common people whether our country belongs to Communalism or Capitalism as long as long as our citizens and country are rich and powerful.

A few weeks ago, the Nobel Prize for literature went to a woman who was unknown to almost all the Chinese people. After searching for her backgrounds on the Internet, we laughed with irony. The author was born in Romania and went through her childhood under the autocracy of the Communist Party. How they emphasize on ideology! Even though I know the communism in Eastern Europe is different from ours, I still feel disfavored.

We Chinese has been tired of Western “China threat” theory for quite a long time. The people who understands China to the highest degree is a famous Englishman, whose name is Bertrand Russell. He wrote in his book The Problem of China that the Chinese don’t like to oppress others like the whites and if there is a country which is too proud to fight, it is China. I totally agree with him.

The Chinese people could never be colonialists. We had an intimate relationship with family and aren’t likely to go far for years just for fun. We regard leaving home as some kind of exile and suffer from homesickness more or less. No matter how undeveloped our hometown is, going home is our principal enjoyment.

I claim that the westerners cannot imagine how tolerant the Chinese are, just according to their own history. They view themselves as tolerant just because they’re more tolerant than their ancestors while they oppress others politically, socially and culturally. They believe without a shadow of doubt that their civilization and lifestyle is superior to others’ so when they encounter an Eastern country just like China, they‘re convinced that the best gift they could offer is demanding us to live our lives in their ways.

The West believes that our common people are oppressed by our government while few are aware of that. However, in the eyes of Chinese people, their images are not as good and honest as the westerners believe themselves to be.

Many western friends asked me why in China sovereignty is superior to human right and whether it’s due to the autocracy of our government. I denied that because the concept of “Human Right” emerged in the Enlightenment so the West control the right of speech in the term of Human Right. It cannot completely apply in China as it does in the West.

I just want to say that when considering many sensitive affairs, the West should not judge them exactly in their ways of thinking and condemn the East completely, which is completely due to their control of right of speech. Only when we understand each other and step into other’s shoe could we come to agreements.
