Seeing things like this consistently reminds me about how good the safety precautions are in the UK. I know lots of people really dislike all the hoops they have to jump through for Health and Safety but compared with this group of men standing precariously on an open ledge while receiving stuff lifted up to them from the crane, it’s not hard to see the benefits of a strong system such as that in the UK. It’s not hard to see a reason why there is such an attitude towards migrant workers, and this picture shows a situation that is by no means an exception. “If you don’t do it, someone else will”, must drive China’s development. But to me and my western eyes, even with the proficiency most Chinese migrant workers have at keeping safe, it seems hard to justify the human cost of cutting such corners.
