I finally did it, and ordered a new Dell server. I’ve probably over extended myself by buying it, but worth it if it means I can get a reliable SBS server running 24/7.
When It arrives, I’ll probably test out a few configurations, including putting VMWare Esx server on it, and running a couple of SBS servers in parallel on it, to see if I can properly configure clustering. Please note that I actually have legitimate licenses for Small Business Server as I am now also a Microsoft Technet Subscriber.
Rough Spec Outline as follows: 2.8Ghz Quad Xeon, 8GB (2x4GB) 1333 MHz Ram, SAS raid card, 146GB SAS hard disk, 3 Year Dell Pro Next Day Support.
Subsequent to the order some people tweeted me about it, and here is what I said:
- Dell Server page drawing me ever closer to thinking about buying a xeon tower server. Like the idea of home based sbs + exchange 2k8 server. #

- @sean1983 MS SBS 2k8, or maybe virtualisation. in reply to sean1983 #
- @sean1983 Are you jealous of my new server specs? http://ow.ly/1Ur6j in reply to sean1983 #
- @sean1983 Depends what you use it for.Server hardware built for reliability, and Dell provides a good service contract.I have a nice laptop. in reply to sean1983 #
- @sean1983 could virtualise on my laptop, but I don’t want to be leaving it on all the time, which generally speaking is the point of servers in reply to sean1983 #
- @sean1983 Nah, old laptop stayed on all the time. Don’t want to damage the new one. Have to have reasonably designed desktop to keep it on. in reply to sean1983 #
- @sean1983 Mid-Good range spec laptop, augmented by external disks always been good enough for me. unless have money issue. in reply to sean1983 #
- @BillGlover Emails, home network. Fundamentally deliberately causing errors and recovering from them to get deeper knowledge of exchange. in reply to BillGlover #
- @BillGlover Well I’ve just downloaded ESXi server. Thinking about clustering. Maybe OWA. If nothing else can run Boinc, and use as desktop. in reply to BillGlover #
- @BillGlover I’m at a loss about how to proceed. I’ve had very little interest from prospective employers. Learning SBS well is useful to me. in reply to BillGlover #
- @mingli Did you see the server spec I posted? http://www.flickr.com/photos/clarkalastair/4670754889/ (Can you see flickr?) in reply to mingli #
